Last week we took a look at three of the newest technologies revolutionizing the realm of “Smart Homes”. The array of new technologies being developed is vast and ever-expanding, and they all have the potential to make your home safe, energy efficient, and ultimately just more comfortable. Smart technologies are on the cutting edge of modern home design, and we didn’t want to stop at covering just three of these incredible technologies.

In this article, we cover three more Smart Home technologies that provide the ability to make your home safer, more comfortable, and most importantly, smarter. Again, these technologies are all currently on the market, so don’t wait to consider including them in your home remodeling plans.

Smart Locks

Did you know that the key, that small, annoying piece of metal that everyone is always misplacing, has been around since 1778? That means that for the vast majority of people in the world, the main thing protecting the security of their own home is based on a technology that is nearly 250 years old! In the literal centuries that have passed, criminals have mastered various ways to override this archaic security system, and key makers have made a killing replacing all the keys that people have lost. It’s clearly a flawed and ancient technology that needs to be replaced by a modern solution. Thankfully, the 21st century has now provided that solution.

Entering onto the smart home technology scene are Smart Locks! The technological revolution around smart locks focuses more on the technology of the key, rather than the physical lock, coincidentally. Personally, I think they would be better referred to as Smart Keys rather than Smart Locks, but alas, I digress. Smart Locks work by replacing the old metal key with something called a cryptographic key. The lock is wirelessly connected to the cryptographic key, which is typically your smartphone. Once you are at your doorstep, you can use your smartphone to unlock the Smart Lock, or you can do it from a remote location. You can check your smartphone while away from home to make sure your doors are locked, and you can even authorize a third party to be able to unlock the doors with their phones as well.

With Smart Locks, gone are the days of misplacing your keys. You’ll never have to come to your door with your hands full and struggle to pull your keys out, and you’ll never have to try and fit a key into a tiny hole in the dark again. All you’ll have to do is swipe your smartphone or give it a voice command, and you’ll be safe inside your home.

Smart Lights

There is a good chance that you are reading this because you have big plans in store to remodel your home. Undoubtedly, the lighting in your home plays a big role in the kind of remodeling you are imagining. And it very well should! The source of light in your home is arguably the most important aspect that determines how your home will look. Whether you’re thinking about installing new ceiling fans, a chandelier, strip lighting, you name it, it’s important that you understand how far light bulb technology has come. Smart Lights are available now, and they give you the ability to totally customize the lighting in your home at will. With Smart Lights, you can set the mood for any room without even having to get up to adjust a switch.

Smart Lights are essentially LED lights bulbs that are wirelessl connected to your smartphone. However, the ability to turn a light on or off from your phone is just the tip of the iceberg with these incredible lights. Using a slider scale on your phone, you can adjust the brightness of these lights to set the mood, utilizing bright lights when you need to focus, and then dimming them down when it’s time to kick back and relax. One of the aspects regarding Smart Lights that I personally find to be especially great is their ability to change color. From your smartphone you can adjust the color of the light bulbs, with access to the full spectrum of color right at your fingertips.

Smart Garage Door Opener

Are you planning on adding a new garage to your home? Maybe you are planning on remodeling an existing one you have to accommodate a workshop? Whatever it may be, you should absolutely consider the option of installing a Smart Garage Door Opener.

Smart Garage Door Openers are the newest innovation regarding garage doors. These awesome devices are installed on the machine that controls the mechanical movements of the garage door. The device is wireless connected to your smartphone, which means that you can can check to see whether or not your garage was left open while you are away from home. Additionally, you can open or close it remotely as well. They can also send your phone alerts when the garage door opens or closes, letting you know who may or may not be home when you get there. Many of these garage door openers can be hooked up to motion detecting cameras which will sense that you’ve arrived and send a signal to the garage door to open automatically.

Whether you’re planning on building a new garage from scratch, or planning to remodel your existing garage, you’re not going to want to miss out on this awesome new technology. It will add a new layer of safety and comfort to your home that a regular garage door opener won’t even come close to being able to provide.
